The NIC is now the Core for Imaging Technology & Education!

In 2001, Harvard and Nikon embarked on a groundbreaking partnership to establish the Nikon Imaging Center at Harvard Medical School. As the first Nikon Imaging Center, an idea conceived by Marc Kirschner, we set a global precedent and inspired the establishment of other NICs all over the world. Our collaboration has been transformative, and has provided us with advanced instruments that have enabled countless imaging projects at HMS.

Despite the success, Nikon and HMS’s originally shared vision for the core has significantly diverged in recent years. With this in mind, and after thoughtful consideration, we have decided not to renew our contract with Nikon, which concludes at the end of this month.

For those who rely on the NIC for your research, I understand this might sound concerning at first, so let me address any worries. Of our 14 microscopes, 6 are on loan from Nikon. Nikon has generously agreed to let us retain these microscopes in our core. This means that the availability and functionality of our microscopes will not be affected by this transition. Your research in our imaging core can continue without interruption.

With the termination of our contract, we are no longer an NIC. Our new name is Core for Imaging Technology & Education (CITE)!

Best,

Jennifer Waters – Director of the Core for Imaging Technology & Education (CITE)
